In March of 2004, Tom Somers joined toastmasters and became of member of Brunswick Toastmasters. Later that year Tom took on the role of Sergeant at Arms. Since that year as Sergeant at Arms, Tom has enjoyed being a leader and has recognized that leadership improves communication skills, by building confidence. Tom went on to serve as President and led Brunswick Toastmasters to become a President’s distinguished club. He then took on the role of Vice President of Education and the following year was elected Vice President of Membership. As Vice President of Membership, Tom’s leadership helped Brunswick Toastmasters earned all three membership awards offered by Toastmasters International. Those membership awards include the Smedley Award, Talk Up Toastmasters and Beat he Clock. Tom is now serving as a club coach and found that rebuilding a club is very rewarding and strengthened his skills in leadership by increasing the membership of the club and fostering the confidence of the club officers.
The youngest of 8 children, Tom grew up in New Hampshire. After graduating from college in 1994 he moved to New Jersey and is currently working with Advanced Technical Solutions as a consultant for The New York Times. His passions include Toastmasters, running, and his dog Tyler. In fact many of Tom’s speech idea come during his 5:00am run with his much-loved dog Tyler.
Through the years Tom has learned the importance of membership. The success of our members very much relies on the help of our fellow members in the form of constructive feedback and new ideas. We need strong clubs with a strong membership base to keep the feedback and new ideas flowing. From Toastmasters to Distinguished Toastmasters: The Road to Success is open for all our members. |
